CELPIP test day: what it's really like
CELPIP test day is one sitting of about 2 hours 50 minutes at a computer, and the test never pauses. celpip.ca sets the rules: arrive 45 minutes early, bring only your ID into the room, and you may hear others speaking. Test takers report the rest: cold rooms, an unfamiliar keyboard and a part that came twice. Here are both.
What celpip.ca says about the day
- Arrive 45 minutes before the start. Check-in closes 15 minutes before it.
- Your ID is the only personal belonging allowed in the test room: everything else goes in a bag or a locker at the centre.
- You get a pen and notepaper, which you hand back at the end. Raise your hand if you need more paper or a washroom break.
- The test is timed and never pauses: staff escort you on a washroom break while the clock runs.
- You may hear other test takers speaking or typing, and celpip.ca calls the sound of others submitting their responses a standard test room condition.
- Listening and Reading contain unscored items, used to develop the test. They can be anywhere in those two tests and look like the scored ones, so you can't tell them apart: give every part your best effort.
- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking come in that order, in one sitting of about 2 hours 50 minutes.
- The Writing screen has a spell-checker, a timer and a word counter.
- The order of test day procedures may vary between test centres.
Our advice: when you get the pen and notepaper, try the pen and look at the paper before the test starts. If anything is missing, raise your hand then, not in the middle of a recording.

What test takers report
We read every public Reddit post and comment about CELPIP from April 16, 2025 to October 16, 2026, most of them on r/CELPIP_Guide. Below is what test takers said about the day itself, in our own words. These are reports, not Paragon's rules: where the two differ, celpip.ca's rules apply.
The room can be cold
Some test takers report rooms that felt cold, or too warm, for a long sitting. Wear the layers you'll keep on, and eat and drink before check-in: there is no scheduled break. If you think you'll need water, ask staff before you assume you can have it.

Others may start speaking while you are still writing
Test takers report that people around them reached Speaking while they were still on Reading or Writing. The centre was raised in 197 posts and comments, other test takers speaking above all. Some find it distracting; others say a silent room would feel worse. Practise at least once with background noise, such as a radio.

Use the whole clock
With the clock running, test takers report rushing to the next screen out of stress, and some lost Speaking tasks to a washroom break. Use each part's time to check your answers before you move on, and use the washroom before check-in.

The keyboard may feel unfamiliar
You type on the centre's computer, and test takers who use a Mac at home report that typing and correcting felt awkward: Ctrl in place of Cmd, and other keys to select and delete. If you can, practise on a PC keyboard before test day.

Watch the word count to the end
Each Writing task asks for about 150 to 200 words, and test takers report going over by adding to their answer in the last minute. Plan to finish a few minutes early, reread, and look at the word counter after your last change.

Listening Part 5 can run long
Test takers report that Part 5's discussion among three people, on video in the official test, can run longer than in practice material. Note each speaker's name and position when they first speak, and listen to the end: positions shift. See Listening Part 5.

A part may come twice
159 posts and comments described a surprise on the day, most often a Reading or Listening part that came twice. That fits celpip.ca's unscored items, which you can't tell from the scored ones: answer the second one as carefully as the first.

A template may not fit the question
Templates came up in 326 posts and comments. Some test takers report that a memorized opening didn't fit how a Speaking task was worded, and that their mind went blank after it. Use a template as a plan, and fit it to the question in front of you rather than reciting it. See CELPIP Speaking.

Rehearse the whole test once
Nerves were the most raised of the test-day themes we counted, in 379 posts and comments. One full mock test, timed and in order, makes the length and the pace familiar before the day.
