CELPIP Writing samples and tips
CELPIP Writing has two tasks in 53 minutes: an email and a survey response, each about 150 to 200 words. Here is how each one works, with sample questions and model answers.
The two tasks
| Task | What you write | Time | Length |

| Task 1: Writing an Email | An email about a situation, covering each point the prompt lists. | 27 min | About 150–200 words |
| Task 2: Responding to Survey Questions | A response to a survey with two options: choose one and explain why. | 26 min | About 150–200 words |

Task 1: Writing an Email
- Three months ago you signed a one-year contract with a local gym. The gym has now closed its location near your home, and the only other branch is a forty-minute drive away. Write an email to the gym's customer service manager. See the model answer
- Your building's management is renovating the apartment above yours. For two weeks the work has started at 7 a.m., including on weekends, and dust has come through your ceiling vents. Write an email to the building manager. See the model answer
Task 2: Responding to Survey Questions
- Your local school board is thinking about changing the school day for next year and has asked parents and other residents for their opinion. It is considering two possible changes. Choose the option you prefer and explain the reasons for your choice in detail. See the model answer
- Your town plans to improve the large park near the town centre next summer. It has enough money for only one of two projects, and it wants residents to vote in an online survey. Choose the option you prefer and explain the reasons for your choice in detail. See the model answer
Tips for both tasks
- Plan before you write: a minute or two to list your points saves rewriting later.
- Use paragraphs: one idea each, so a reader can follow your organization.
- Write to the asked length, about 150 to 200 words, with the word counter in view.
- Write for the reader in the prompt: the tone of an email to a manager is not the tone of one to a friend.
- Keep two or three minutes to reread: fix verb tenses, missing words and spelling.
